Falling Rocks, Everybody Dies
Oot finishes his questions. The ceiling finishes the conversation.
// The Record
For days the pod's newest arrival —
Oot, the oldest tortle on The Rock and the man you go to when you need to know something — had sat silent in his cell. This morning he climbs onto the common-room table instead and goes down the line: six prisoners, one at a time, every rumor he's ever heard about each of them laid out to their face.
Mistarion's memories bled away by a magic dive gone wrong, or traded, or eaten.
Verum-Gaea's revoked title and the encryption keys supposedly locked in his skull.
Kael's too-clean face and the favors that appear from nowhere.
ND-E's dead bystander and his knack for closing cases the brass wanted buried.
Now's kill order, her missing serial number, the real woman her face was copied from.
Velveteen, who doesn't move like any amoeboid Oot has seen. Nobody gives him a straight answer.
He doesn't get to finish. Three explosions walk across the prison, the ceiling comes down, and — after a beat where the DM cheerfully kills everyone — the party wakes in red light, uninjured, the cell gate blown open.
Velveteen digs
Oot out of the rubble;
Now hauls him clear. The null field only covers the cell blocks, so the plan is simple: get out. They arm up with cot metal and scrap.
At the gen-pop gate they find
Korlok — four arms, pirate captain, a personal grudge against
Mistarion and
Now — penned in with a terrified half-elf kid named Jax and a tabaxi called Mira Doss. To get the kid out, they throw the levers and release the whole block. Korlok grants a grudging head start; Mira runs off to scout for him.
Velveteen kneels at the crossroads, hands flat on the floor, and feels a pull west.
West is the library, where three prisoners are beating the guard Hale to death. The party runs them off, inherits an arc baton (it goes to
Now), and turns up two spell scrolls — Memorize for
ND-E, Witch Bolt for
Mistarion — plus real ink and parchment. Hale, dying, coughs up the shape of the day: The Rock is under attack. Every guard pulled to the upper docks. Comms in chaos. They leave him.
In the worship center, another dying man — Ezra Cole — asks
Verum-Gaea to witness his confession. His rambling life story resolves into a single admission: he was the Emperor's servant, grew up beside him, and on the day of the Emperor's death, he was the one who did it. Then he's gone. The party takes a data pad, a healing scroll, and a fistful of holy symbols, and moves on.
The guard tower holds one man: Corporal Wexel, maybe twenty, locked in the booth, crying, a thumb near the button that floods the block with riot glass.
ND-E talks him down cop to cop. Wexel sees
Korlok coming and hits the door instead — the party spills into the guard room: an empty gun safe, cold coffee, and radio traffic confirming the worst. The Rock's engines were killed hours ago. The party was unconscious far longer than it felt. The docks are lost, the defenders have fallen back to Administration, and someone is scrubbing the attackers' identities from the logs in real time, fighting ND-E for every scrap.
Oot stays behind to hold the lift button — "I don't have a life outside this rock anymore" — asking only that they get Jax out. The lift climbs. It opens on an upper-level junction: signs for the Docks, R&D, Administration, and, strangely, "Armory / Improving Grounds." Combat echoes from everywhere at once. That's where we stop.
// Ways Of Seeing It
The tortle lists a dozen versions of her and asks which is true. She gives him the one about the blind men and the elephant, because it's the only honest answer: every account is a hand on a different part of the animal. She admits one thing — I made a mistake, that's why I'm here — and lets the rest stand sealed. When the rock falls on
Oot she is under it before she decides to be. Later someone puts a baton in her hand that she isn't quite trained for. She takes it. She would rather be sparring with friends. She does not say so twice.
Everyone in this prison is a case he could close if he cared to. He doesn't. He tells the tortle he isn't solving anything, just decommissioning his cousins, and it lands as a joke because the truth usually does. Then a twenty-year-old with a riot-gas button starts crying and ND-E does the only trick he has left: he tells the kid exactly what he is — a cop — and it works. In the guard room something on the far end of the network is erasing itself faster than he can read it. He gets enough. He always gets enough. He is so tired.
Oot interrogates a history Mistarion cannot confirm, because it isn't in him anymore — each rumor a coat held up by a stranger: try this one on. He meditates through the alarm. What finally moves him isn't the open gate; it's the word library. Parchment. Ink. A scroll of Witch Bolt with his name on it. The null field thins the moment they leave the block and he can feel the weave again, like blood returning to a slept-on arm. He is not escaping a prison. He is going to get his mind back, one page at a time.
He says almost nothing and does almost everything. Checks the dead guard for a key before anyone else thinks to. Pockets a set of homemade thieves' tools. Throws the lever. Hands the baton to the person who can actually use it. When the tortle asks who sent him, Kael asks who sent the tortle. Whatever's been running quietly in the background for him — and something always is — the ceiling coming down didn't switch it off. If anything, the chaos is useful.
He repeats himself and hates that he has to: Chief-Observer of House Verum. The Citadel took his codes; they cannot take his blood. Twice this session he kneels beside a dying man with no spells and only his hands — first
Oot, then Ezra Cole, who wants a witness for his confession and picks Verum because of a title Verum isn't sure he still holds. He gives the man his whole attention and carries the secret out. The healing scroll goes in his pocket. An observer observes. It is, at the moment, the only office he can actually fill.
He wakes first, because he was the least braced against any of it. He lifts the slab off
Oot without much fuss and asks if the tortle is okay before he asks anything else. At the crossroads he puts his cheek to the floor and lets the station tell him which way — west — and he's right. He holds the hands of two dying men and tells them, meaning it, that the universe has them now. He keeps asking people to be his friend: the bird, the pirate, the tortle. When the day gets loud he has exactly one thing to offer. You need to center your gravity, dude.
// Threads Left Hanging
Someone is taking The Rock
Well-armed, well-drilled, methodical enough to wipe their own tracks mid-assault. Not a riot — an operation. Nobody's said whose.
The way out is through
Engines dead, docks gone, the only route up ends in a corridor where every sign points at a fight — Docks, R&D, Administration, and whatever "Improving Grounds" is supposed to mean.
Oot is alone on the button, and Jax is yours now
One of those is a debt. The other is a kid.
Oot took the button on one condition, and Jax is it.The man who killed the Emperor died a prisoner on The Rock
Ezra Cole confessed to the assassination of Emperor Strephon, and only this group heard him say it. That's either worthless or worth everything, depending on who's listening.
Everyone kept one rumor
Somewhere in what
Oot rattled off, each of you quietly decided one was true — and didn't say which.Your things are in the warden's vault
In Administration:
ND-E's confiscated grimoire, whatever
Now won't talk about,
Velvet's robe. The route happens to run right past it.
